University Police Department (UPD) is excited to announce a new service on campus to better serve and protect our campus and community. Text to 9-1-1 is a service for faculty, staff, students, and community members who may be deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment, or who cannot safely call 9-1-1 in a dangerous situation.

- The University maintains this emergency information hotline for status updates for campus wide emergencies; e.g., flooding, earthquake, fire.
- At Sonoma State University the safety of our community members is always at the top of our agenda. A truly safe campus can be achieved only through the cooperation of all students, faculty and staff. There are many people contributing to the safety and security of the SSU campus. The majority of crimes on campus are crimes of opportunity. This includes theft of bicycles, backpacks, computers, books and parking decals. The willingness of students, faculty and staff to secure their property and to report suspicious activity is essential to the prevention of these thefts. Here are some additional crime prevention tips:
- Never leave valuables in plain sight. This includes your vehicle and apartment.
- Secure your vehicle or apartment, even when leaving either for just a few minutes.
- Record ID numbers of valuables and take advantage of our engravers for loan or the bike registration program.
- Report suspicious activities or persons to University Police. If you are unsure, report it anyway.
- Report maintenance problems to Facilities Management, especially if you are having problems with locks and securing your on campus residence.
- When out and about, travel in pairs, walk assertively and travel in lighted areas.
- Know the locations and utilize the blue light telephones should you have or notice an emergency.
- Safeguard Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) and shred confidential information before discarding.
Community Notifications
Crime statistics can be found on the web at University Police. In addition to publishing an annual security report, the SSU University Police informs the campus community about campus crime in a number of ways as follows:
Special Crime Alerts/Warnings
In matters where there is a threat to safety, the issuance of a timely crime alert, the information will be distributed throughout the campus and posted via the campus email system.
Crime Log and Media
Summaries of campus crime incidents are published in the STAR student newspaper. University Police also works in partnership with the STAR and SSU News center to publish information related to crime and campus safety issues. The Daily Crime Log can be viewed at the University Police website.
Preparations
Personal Preparedness Kit
The University highly recommends that each campus resident bring their own personal preparedness kit with them when they move into the Residential Community. This kit should include three days worth of supplies, such as water and food, basic first aid supplies, and any special need items. Specific Needs
Students with medical conditions are encouraged to discuss their specific needs with their Area Coordinator to prepare a plan regarding evacuation in the event of a campus emergency.
Evacuations
Area Coordinators (AC), Residential Education & Campus Housing staff, and University Police Officers are trained in emergency evacuation procedures and responding to emergencies. In case of an evacuation, residents must remember to vacate the premises and summon assistance immediately. If a major emergency should strike, residents are directed to a residence evacuation site which is listed below based on village:
- Beaujolais Village: Fountain/Field in the middle of Beaujolais Village and Tuscany Village
- Cabernet Village: Grass field next to the Children's School.
- Sauvignon Village: Grass field North of Redwood Drive, closest to Lot D
- Tuscany Village: Fountain/Field in the middle of Beaujolais Village and Tuscany Village
- Verdot Village: Grass area across from Redwood Drive in front of Schulz Information Center.
- Zinfandel Village: Grass field next to the Children's School.
Power Outages
During University business hours residents can obtain information and status updates about a power outage at the Residential Education and Campus Housing Office located in Zinfandel Village, at University Police, or at the Student Center. ACs and RAs can also be contacted. For operating medical equipment that requires power, please contact University Police.
Fire Safety
In case of a fire, activate the fire alarm by pulling the lever on the alarm box nearest your room. The fire alarm is a building alarm only, so be sure to call University Police to report the fire as well. Training and Practice
The campus performs periodic evacuation drills and training on emergency response. The department has maintained very positive working relations with Residential Education & Campus Housing to ensure that we are working in concert on many programs. Additionally, fire alarm apparatus are centrally monitored and polled for potential trouble signals or devices being "offline".
